Common Joomla Site Problems and How to Solve Them

Sooner or later, a Joomla site runs into problems: hacking, downtime, errors, slow performance. We have treated over 350 sites and know: 80% of problems are typical. Let's look at the most common ones and what to do about them. This will save time and money.

Problem 1. Site Hack

Signs:

• Redirects — the site sends users to foreign resources.
• Google flags it — "may harm your computer".
• The hosting wrote — malicious files found.
• New admins appeared — in the Joomla admin panel.
• Strange pages — in the Google index.

Solution: Virus Removal, Malicious Code Removal, Protection and Firewall. A DIY cleanup often leaves backdoors.

Problem 2. The Site Does Not Open

Signs:

• White screen — an empty page with no errors.
• 500 error — internal server error.
• Database error — "Could not connect".
• Timeout — the page does not load.
• Admin panel unavailable — login does not work.

Solution: Bug Fixing. The cause may be in the code, database, hosting or an extension.

Problem 3. The Site Is Slow

Signs:

• Long loading — more than 3 seconds.
• PageSpeed below 50 — Google complains.
• High bounce rate — users leave.
• Rankings drop — a slow site ranks worse.
• Hosting is overloaded — the site consumes too many resources.

Solution: Speed Optimization and Performance Audit. Cache, images, compression, CDN.

Problem 4. Errors After an Update

Signs:

• The site broke — after a Joomla or extension update.
• Extension conflicts — one interferes with another.
• Features do not work — forms, modules, components.
• Settings lost — template, parameters.
• No rollback possible — if there is no backup.

Solution: roll back the update, restore from backup, fix conflicts. Often requires a specialist.

Problem 5. Outdated Joomla

Signs:

• An old version — 3.x or 4.x.
• Extensions are incompatible — everything breaks after updating.
• Vulnerabilities — public holes.
• Hosting disables PHP — the old version is not supported.
• No updates — developers abandoned the extensions.

Solution: Joomla Update. Better not to postpone — the hacking risk grows.

Problem 6. Duplicate Pages

Signs:

• The same content at different URLs — weight is diluted.
• Parameters in the URL — ?id=123, ?view=article.
• Pagination — incorrectly set up.
• Canonical links — not set.
• Rankings drop — Google does not know which page to show.

Solution: set up canonical, 301 redirects, robots.txt. Included in Technical SEO Audit.

Problem 7. Poor Indexing

Signs:

• Pages are not in Google — the search engine does not see them.
• robots.txt blocks — the wrong thing is disallowed.
• No sitemap — sitemap.xml missing.
• Indexing errors — in Search Console.
• Low traffic — the site is not growing.

Solution: SEF and Sitemap, check robots.txt, set up sitemap.

Problem 8. Data Lost

Signs:

• Content lost — articles, pages.
• Users lost — the database was wiped.
• Products lost — the catalog is empty.
• Database damaged — tables unreadable.
• No backup — nothing to restore from.

Solution: restore from backup, manual recovery, database cleanup. Prevention — regular backups.

Problem 9. Slow Admin Panel

Signs:

• Long loading — the admin panel lags.
• Too many extensions — dozens installed.
• Heavy components — large database tables.
• Cache disabled — everything loads every time.
• Weak hosting — not enough resources.

Solution: clean up extensions, optimize the database, cache, change hosting. Included in Performance Audit.

Problem 10. No Backups

Signs:

• Backups are not made — at all.
• Backups are outdated — a month old.
• Backups were not tested — you do not know if they work.
• Storage is unreliable — on the same hosting.
• No recovery plan — what to do in a crisis.

Solution: set up regular backups, test the restore, store separately. Included in Project Support.

4. Check — that everything works.
5. Prevention — so it does not happen again.
